Now that we are in the fall weather everyone has some extra time to spend at their sewing machines and we had a lot of quilts to view at our latest zoom meeting. Our guild has talented ladies who are making quilts for their friends and family along with generous donations to our community quilts program and placemats for meals on wheels. We have an active guild with wonderful speakers each month, sewing days and workshops in person and zoom, if you are looking for a guild and would like to join us for a meeting please contact us for more information [email protected]
November Program – Zoom
Batting: What’s Inside Matters
Presented by Stephanie Hackney
Director of Sales & Marketing, Craft & Retail
Hobbs Bonded Fibers
www.hobbsbatting.com
This lecture offers quilters and other creatives a chance to learn all about batting, and to possibly WIN FREE BATTING!
This lecture covers:
• the questions we ask quilters to assist them in narrowing down the many
batting choices to what’s ‘best’ for achieving the results they desire
• the various fiber types, and pros and (potential) cons of each type
• what we recommend for specific use cases (modern quilts, charity quilts,
art quilts, wall hangings, runners, throws, etc.)
• proper use and care of battings and quilts
• tips and tricks for best results
• and, a bit of fun!
The lecture is appx. 1-1.5 hours in length, depending on if questions are asked during the lecture or we hold all questions until the end, in which case I’m happy to offer time afterwards for a Q&A session.

Brett Lewis
Avid Quilter and Fabric Designer, Brett Lewis, aka Natural Born Quilter, discovered his love of the craft through learning to sew and quilt in the spring of 2016. Fast forward five years and over 60 quilts later, Brett has attended Spring and Fall International Quilt Markets, with his work and original patterns showcased in Birch Fabric’s, Hobbs Batting, and his very own Quilt Market booth.
He has been featured in the Designer Profile section of the acclaimed magazine Love Patchwork and Quilting and 2022 Quilter’s, various podcasts, developed his own Designer’s Palette thread collection with WonderFil Specialty Threads, and instructs his very own EQ8 designed quilt patterns, with classes focusing on foundation paper piecing, fussy cutting, and curves.
His quilting adventures have taken him to attend an Alaska quilting cruise, and becoming a certified Sew Kind of Wonderful Instructor. And to come full circle, Brett debuted his premiere fabric line Stag and Thistle with Northcott Fabrics in the fall of 2019. Brett describes his quilting style as Contemporary Traditional, using contemporary vibrant and bold fabrics with traditional patterns. Brett’s second fabric collection “Prairie Meadow” shipped to quilt shops in September 2021.
We were able to have an in person meeting on September 14th; our guild followed all the provincial covid guidelines so we could have a safe and enjoyable meeting for our guild members. Some of the exciting upcoming events are a return to in person sewing days, the annual retreat and a workshop. The guild will be continuing in the future with a mix of in person and zoom meetings and sewing days.
Our guild members were busy over the summer months and brought their projects for show & tell.
Even during the slower summer months our guild continues to have several activities. There is a park gathering planned for August 10th at Merkley Park, 6:30pm – 8:30pm, 21970 – 124th Avenue, Maple Ridge. Bring a chair, show & tell projects, cold drink and/or snack and enjoy some outdoor social time. This is a great opportunity for anyone who is considering joining our guild to drop by, make some new friends and find out about all the activities our guild is planning for the 2021-2022 year.
There will also be two Zoom sewing days in August on the 7th and 21st. Work on your project or join in for a chat. The link will be emailed out to our guild members.
The next guild meeting will be September 14th, 7:00pm -9:00pm, meeting details will be posted soon.
If you are interested in finding out more about our guild please contact us.
Our June meeting was a zoom social. Games were played with prizes given out; a trivia quiz and name that block. There was also a prize for the best decorated hat. The guild members went into smaller break-out rooms for a short time for some “get to know you” conversations and find out some interesting things that others have experienced in their lives. A fabulous way to strengthen friendships and build new ones among our guild. Our programs committee organized a terrific meeting and everyone had a good laugh at some of the topics and discussions that came up. A great way to end our guild year.
The guild doesn’t have meetings during July and August but there will be some Saturday zoom sewing days; dates will be posted in the near future. Our meetings will resume in September and membership renewal information has been sent out. The programs committee have already been booking speakers for the 2021-22 year and the mystery quilt will continue through the summer with the final clue in August.
Thank you to the many guild members who volunteered their time and energy over the 2020-21 year to keep our guild connected with each other and involved with the projects we do. Covid changed how our guild operated but we adapted and were able to enjoy our vibrant community of quilters through facebook and zoom. Many quilts, beads of courage bags, cardiac patient pillows and place mats were sewn to donate to our community. We had sewing days, sew a-longs, social events, meetings and shared photos of completed projects; though we may not have seen each other in person we stayed connected through the internet.
Our May 11th meeting had Karen Brown from www.justgetitdonequilts.com as the speaker. She gave a terrific presentation on being the best quilter you can be. Many hints and suggestions on how to organize our fabric and projects and how to find motivation to finish projects that have been put to the side.
Our guild members sent in photos of their completed May projects.
Every Saturday our guild has a sewing day and once a month there is a sew along project. The April project was an Easter basket using the pattern from www.diaryofaquilter.com Easter Basket and the bunny bags Bunny Treat Bags from www.sewcanshe.com
